What is flat-fee recruiting?
Flat-fee recruiting charges a fixed price per job posting regardless of the number of applications or hires — as opposed to agency recruiting which charges a percentage of the hired candidate's salary (typically 15–25%). For a role paying £40,000, an agency fee at 20% is £8,000. A flat-fee job posting on GeraJobs costs £29/month per role. The economics are materially different for most SME hiring scenarios.
When flat-fee recruiting outperforms agencies
Flat-fee recruiting wins when: the role is clearly defined and sourceable through job posting; you have internal capacity to screen applicants; the hiring volume is high enough that agency fees would become prohibitive; or the salary is low enough that percentage-based agency fees would be disproportionate. It is best for operational, administrative, technical, and graduate-level roles.
When agencies still make sense
Agency recruiting is justified for: highly specialised or senior roles (director+, niche technical) where passive candidate reach matters; confidential searches; markets where the agency has exclusive relationships; or when you have no internal HR capacity to manage an application pipeline. Most companies use flat-fee for 70-80% of roles and agency for the senior 20-30%.
