Gera Pay Index — FAQ

What is the Gera Pay Index?
The Gera Pay Index is a regional pay index computed by GeraJobs from real ONS ASHE data. For each UK region it divides the median of that region's published occupation medians by the median of the matching UK-national medians, times 100. A value of 100 means pay matches the UK; above 100 is higher, below 100 is lower. Pairing on the same occupation set controls for occupation mix. The full method is published on this page.
Which UK region has the highest salaries?
London has the highest Gera Pay Index at 111.6 (UK = 100), with a regional median of £41,034 across 241 occupations ONS publishes for it. South West is lowest at 92.6 (£32,878).
Is the Gera Pay Index based on real data?
Yes. Every input is a real published ONS estimate — median gross annual pay for full-time employees by 4-digit SOC 2020 occupation, April 2025 reference period, 2025-10-23 release. No figure is modelled or interpolated; cells ONS suppressed are excluded, never estimated. The index is a transparent aggregation you can reproduce from the same ONS tables.

How the Gera Pay Index is calculated

For each UK region R, we take the set O(R) of occupations for which ONS published an unsuppressed regional median. The region's figure is the median over O(R) of the region-R medians; the paired UK figure is the median over the same occupations of the UK-national medians. The Gera Pay Index is regionalMedian ÷ pairedUkMedian × 100, to one decimal place. Pairing on the same occupation set controls for occupation mix, isolating the regional pay differential. Every input is a real published ONS ASHE figure (Median gross annual pay (GBP), full-time employees, ASHE 2025 provisional, April 2025 reference period); nothing is modelled or interpolated. The UK full-time headline median is £39,039 (ONS, April 2025).
