Frequently asked questions

What is the median salary in the United States?
As of May 2025 (BLS OEWS), the national annual median wage across all occupations is $50,980. The median is the midpoint — half of US workers earn more and half earn less. It is a more representative "typical pay" figure than the mean, which is pulled up by very high earners.
What is the difference between median and mean wage?
The median is the middle value (50th percentile) — half of workers earn above it. The mean (average) is the total wage bill divided by the number of workers, so a small number of very high salaries pull it up. BLS OEWS publishes both for every occupation; the mean is almost always higher than the median.
Which occupation pays the most in the US?
Among detailed BLS OEWS occupations, Pediatric Surgeons has the highest national median wage at $559,030 a year (May 2025). Note BLS top-codes any wage at or above $239,200/year, so several very high-paying occupations share that ceiling figure.
Where does this US salary data come from?
Every figure is from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics (OEWS) May 2025 national release — cross-industry, all-ownership estimates. As US federal government work it is public domain. GeraJobs publishes the BLS estimates verbatim; suppressed cells are shown as "—", never zero-filled or interpolated.
How often is this data updated?
Annually. BLS releases OEWS roughly once a year (the May reference period is typically published the following spring). The current data is BLS OEWS May 2025; GeraJobs re-dates the cluster on each release.
